SeC Workshop at the ACC Heart House - Washington

Model-driven Prediction and Simulation in Pediatric Cardiology / Sim-e-Child’s Outcomes: EU-US eHealth cooperation in Virtual Physiological Human - American College of Cardiology Heart House

As anticipated in SeC’s 2nd Periodic Review in December 2011, the last dissemination event has been hosted in Washington by the ACC, at the Heart House, on 18 June 2012.

The SeC workshop, implemented in the form of a highly specialized seminar, was attended by bio-medical and bio-engineering experts, with presentations by the core technical and clinical team of SeC operating on both sides of the Atlantic, with as distinguished discussants Nathan Wilson (Open Source Medical Software Corp.), Andrew Taylor, (UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science), and Karl Stroetmann (Empirica). The very successful seminar was also honoured by the presence of SeC’s Project Officer, Marta Lorens (ICT for Health Unit, European Commission).

Attendance to e-Health Week 2012 - Copen Hague

A presentation of SeC as practical case of Transatlantic Co-operation (Grid-Enabled Platform for Simulations in Paediatric Cardiology: Toward the Personalized Virtual Child Heart) was made by our Coordinator, Michael Suehling, at the EU-US Workshop within the eHealth Week in Copen Hague on May 7th 2012.

The presentation was divided into a technical and a clinical part, and highlighted the benefits of EU/US co-operation through SeC:

• Base modelling on broad range of data (challenge for rare diseases)
– Ensures more robust and reproducible models
• Handle heterogeneous protocols and clinical workflows
– Increases mutual interoperability and integrability
• Increased potential for dissemination and networking
– Social networking & community building is key
• Exchange of workforces (e.g. PhD student, TUM, SCR, JHU)
• Increased awareness of different regulatory processes
• Leverage technological & financial synergies
– Avoid disparate, redundant work in EU and US
• Reflects needs of globally-acting healthcare industry
– Penetrate global markets
