Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany

Founded in 1868, the Technische Universität München (TUM) is among the most prestigious technical schools world wide, producing several Nobel Laureates. The Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures, headed by Prof. Nassir Navab, provides a strong research and educational link between medical and computer science communities. The chair has numerous collaborations with hospitals such as the German Heart Center Munich, and various research centers on medical imaging and providers of healthcare and medical technologies. The chair has been also involved in the PASSPORT and ROBCAST projects sponsored by the European Commission, focusing on patient specific simulation and pre-operative training for liver surgery, and robot assisted keyhole neurosurgery. TUM is a necessary new partner because they will provide a specific competence that is not covered by any Health-e-Child partners, namely, fluid dynamics visualization. Their work will build on other VPH work the TUM has been involved with including the FP7 ICT project Passport. TUM work will focus on WP5 to provide a flexible environment for analysis of complex mechanical and hemodynamical characteristics of the entire heart along with the aortic arch.
